Fixing a Common Fault

Fixing a common fault is normally used to address a movement based issue, but there is a common fault amongst coaches that has become more apparent as the landscape of the fitness industry has evolved.

Coaching, teaching, and learning body weight movements is one of the most challenging and misunderstood realms of the fitness industry. It is not possible without the use of specialized equipment to decrease the body weight of an individual instantly to allow them to learn a movement at a lighter load. There a handful of clever tricks used that achieve instant gratification with little to no long term improvement. Most coaches make the mistake of trying to teach gymnastics based movements using scaling techniques that are effective in teaching weightlifting. Learning and teaching body weight movements is a different game. Additionally the rise in mainstream high rep calisthenics has also lead to a rise in shoulder related injuries. Obviously not done purposefully from coaches but occurring from a misunderstood approach in teaching gymnastics based movements or a lack of knowledge on the topic all together.

It's high risk and high cost for any coach to not actively seek out more information on the subject. Losing a client to injury negatively effects your reputation as a coach, you not only lose the client but also the income from that client along with any potential referral business. Beyond that as a coach or athlete a shoulder injury requiring surgical repair can cost in excess of $10,000 with recovery taking over 6 month with no guarantee of regaining full function. Taking measure to be well equip to prevent that from happing should hold a high priority and value!

  • Does this course have a bias towards strict body weight movements?

Yes and no. Strict Strength doesn't teach any kipping/dynamic techniques but fully acknowledges the benefits of them. We don't want to blur the lines by teaching both strict and dynamic methods.
